Second Chapter
I awakened to brilliant sunlight streaming into the camper; Emily was by my side staring into my eyes. It took me a few moments to register where we were or the trauma from the night before. She smiled at me with admiration and kissed me.
“Hey sunshine,” she said softly. “I wasn’t sure if you were going to wake up.”
I rubbed my eyes, blinked a few times and tried to pick up my head.
“Shh,” she whispered mischievously. “We’re the first ones awake and we shouldn’t bother anyone.”
She rolled on top of me and her firm body was exciting.
“No you’re not,” called out Sophia. “We’ve been up for the past half hour.”
“Me too,” chimed in Adam, obviously also awake. So much for a morning romp.
“How’s Joey?” asked Emily somewhat despondently that there would be no hanky-panky for now.
“Still sleeping,” answered Adam. “He’s not bleeding but the gash in his head is pretty large so we should get him to a hospital to stitch him up.”
“Once we figure out how to get out of here,” stated Charlie gloomily. The camper was still facing the wrong direction and the plows only exacerbated the problem by driving throughout the night and burying it in a four foot snowbank. I started the engine once more to provide some heat.
“You got a shovel Vinnie?” asked Adam.
Never even thought of it.
“Uh, no,” I replied dejectedly.
“Great,” he said disparagingly, waving his hand dismissively.
“Wait. Here comes another plow,” said Sophia enthusiastically. We cast our eyes out the front of the camper, which was facing toward the back, and sure enough a huge plow was heading down the road.
Sophia scrambled to the front door, which was on the same side as the road as a result of the camper facing the wrong way, pushed it opened and stood in the middle of the road wearing only her jeans and bra. The plow, which was barreling toward us, slowed and stopped about twenty feet in front of her. Sophia was a beauty and the driver must have thought…
Actually I have no idea what he thought but he stopped and shouted out from the window, “What are you doing? You’re going to freeze to death.” He was a gruffy man, probably in his forties, with a trapper hat, full beard and a cigarette hanging from his lips.
Sophia smiled widely and spoke loudly. “We’re stuck in this snowbank and need to get our friend to the hospital. Can you give us a hand?”
The driver eyed her suspiciously, after all it was a cold wintery day, she was on the roadside scantily dressed and he must have thought that his fantasy dream was about to be fulfilled. Finally he said, “Go back to the camper and I’ll hook up a winch. Are you driving?”
She shook her head no.
“Ok, then tell whoever’s driving that thing to put it in neutral and release the emergency brake.” He smiled. “Glad to be a service,” he remarked with a lecherous tone.
Sophia ran back inside and Charlie immediately covered her with a blanket. She was shivering and he hugged her, rubbing his hands across her covered back and arms to generate some heat.
“Great job Sophia. I couldn’t have done it better myself,” he said, eliciting a few laughs from us.
I got behind the wheel, disengaged the gears and released the emergency brake as the driver backed up the snowplow and placed a chain with a hook underneath the camper. He walked to the front door, tapped on it and said earnestly, “Once the camper is free, toot the horn twice,” and returned to his truck.
It was amazing how easily he pulled us out of the embankment and turned us around. As he was unhooking the chain, I asked him where the nearest hospital was. “About three miles down the road. St. Joseph’s,” he replied. “The road’s pretty clear so you shouldn’t have much trouble getting there.”
“Thank you,” I said, searching my wallet for a twenty.
“Nah, I don’t want your money,” he stated, grinned widely and spoke almost in whisper, “I could’ve spent twenty at the titty bar and instead got a free show right here on the road.”
He removed the cigarette and wiped his nose, which was running from the cold air, with his sleeve.
“You better take real good care of her because she’s a beauty. Just wish I was twenty years younger.”
He smiled and added, “And not married.”
